Mushroom Pepper Masala

Simple quick masala of mushroom, flavoured with black pepper and aromatic Indian spices. This recipe is for those days where you literally want to dump everything in the pot and return to your dent on the couch. The thought of cooking curry from scratch probably scares many of us, but it’s really easy when you know the flavour combinations of the different spices.


Units Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups crimini mushrooms, chopped into four
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 cup onion, chopped finely
  • 1 cup tomato, chopped finely
  • 2 tbsp garlic ginger paste
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tbsp chilly powder
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • Lime wedge, coriander leaves and sesame seeds, for garnish


  1. Heat oil in a large heavy bottomed non-stick skillet over medium heat, add the onions and ginger garlic paste and fry until onions are translucent.
  2. Add chopped tomatoes with turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala. Mix well for a minute and add 1/2 cup of water. Sauté for few minutes till it becomes mushy.
  3. Now add the mushrooms, add two tbsp of water. Occasionally stir for 7 -9 minutes.
  4. Garnish with coriander leaves, sesame seeds and squeeze in some lime.
